In January 1963, the broadcast of Astro Boy began as Japan's first full-fledged domestically produced continuous TV anime. Fast forward 60 years to the fall of 2023, and, intriguingly, an anime adaptation of one of its episodes, Pluto, based on The Greatest Robot on Earth from Astro Boy, will be produced and streamed for the first time worldwide. The original work is the manga Pluto, which began serialization in September 2003. Naoki Urasawa, known for creating numerous works, collaborated with his long-time partner, Takashi Nagasaki, who served as the producer. Urasawa, deeply respectful of Astro Boy, chose an episode, The Greatest Robot on Earth, and crafted this work. Osamu Tezuka's disciple, Makoto Tezuka, who conveyed during adaptation permission, served as the supervisor, saying, If you're going to draw it, please make it something that could be considered Mr. Urasawa's representative work. The original Astro Boy episode The Greatest Robot on Earth was serialized in Shonen from June 1964's furoku to January 1965's main issue for over six months. Naoki Urasawa recalls, I read the original work for the first time when I was five years old, and at that time, there was an image in my mind that it occupied the center of all the manga. Even as a child, I thought, 'What a poignant story.' To commemorate the anime adaptation of Pluto, this exhibition will trace back from the original manga Pluto to its source, The Greatest Robot on Earth from Astro Boy. By displaying original manuscripts from both works side by side, visitors will have the opportunity to feel the homage within Pluto to its source material.
